Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter of Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. As a young girl, her carnival barker father died, leaving Ruth's mother without a choice other than to be a cleaning lady and waitress in order to provide for the family. Ruth was raised in the poor Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She was a student in the area. She only attended school for a couple of years, then leaving to pursue her acting profession. The path she chose did not come without challenges. When she was in New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills for crime magazines, the theatre work that she longed for was not available. After working as a hat-check woman in a nightclub she quit her job and moved back to Boston. The New England Repertory Company was her first gig as an actor who was steady. The company paid her working during the day in the ushering department. In addition, she was a drama student and ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
